His history of Pixar Animation Studios, The Pixar Touch: The Making of a Company, was named a Wall Street Journal Best Book of the Year, a Fast Company Best Business Book of the Year, and a Library Journal Best Business Book of the Year.
His previous book, Love and Hate in Jamestown: John Smith, Pocahontas, and the Start of a New Nation (Knopf, 2003), a history of the Jamestown colony and the Virginia Company, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.
He started writing for magazines at 15 with an article in the April 1977 issue of the now-defunct computer magazine Byte.
He received his bachelor’s degree in economics and computer science from the College of William and Mary and graduate degrees from Harvard and Cambridge.
